Nothing better than a whole morning in La Kukula Lodge to discover the wonderful world of birds. This is one of the activities that many of our guests enjoy in here, mainly from January up to April, the best season for birdwatching in Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast.
List of birds for La Kukula Lodge, Puerto Viejo
Large birds such as Chesnut-mandibled Toucan (Ramphastos swainsonii) or Keel-billed Toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus) are relatively easy to spot in La Kukula Lodge’s gardens. The incredibly fast hummingbirds are seen everyday when having breakfast and sometimes is difficult to tell what type of hummingbird is in front of us. At least 5 different types of them are seen almost everyday.
Some other birds easy to spot right here are Tanagers (Piranga rubra), or Antshrikes like Fasciated Antshrike (Cybilainus lineatus), Manakins like White-collared Manakin (Manacus candei) and many other resident birds that are very active and visible during most of the year like Slaty-tailed Trogons (Trogon massena), Gray-necked Wood Rails (Aramides cajanea) or the commonly known Chachalaca (Ortalis vetula).
La Kukula Lodge recommends booking an advanced birdwatching tour with Mr. Riki, the best local guide. Mr. Riki also offers tours for beginners and for families.
